It was a hot day, but the heat didn't wilt the spirits of the people of Antioch who gathered in the parking lot of Lakeshore Church. No, they were there in the belief that their gathering would work to make things better in their community, so as they prepared to march down Bell Rd. to the mall and the rally that awaited them, there was a sense of expectation that something big was about to happen.
The first FedUp March and Rally against violence was held on Tuesday, August 5 in conjunction with the Mayors Night Against Crime. The event was a partnership between faith communities, service organizations, and area businesses as a first step in an overall movement to work together for the betterment of the Antioch community.
While other communities held gatherings against crime that night, the Antioch event was the largest in Nashville, drawing well over 500 persons to talk, sing, play, and worship.
Area youth were encouraged to take a pledge against teen violence developed by other youth from the community.
The event drew leaders from all over Nashville, including Mayor Karl Dean, Police Chief Serpas, and various councilpersons, judges, and other public officials.
